  • Talk therapy helps you understand how your trauma effects you.

It’s not about coping better. It’s about healing actual wounds that are keeping you stuck.

What is EMDR Anyway?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy proven to reduce physical and mental disturbances related to traumatic memories and many mental health disorders, while increasing tolerance to overall daily stress.

How is it Different from Talk Therapy?

  1. EMDR utilizes eye-movements or tapping to activate the brains natural ability to heal trauma wounds created in the psyche.

  2. EMDR does not require you to spill all of the details of what happened, nor how you feel about it.

  3. It’s is possible to experience some relief of symptoms after just the first reprocessing session.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR Can Help You:

  • Overcome feelings of fear and anxiety when you’re reminded of what happened.

  • Stop blaming yourself for what happened to you.

  • Navigate unpleasant emotions with confidence.

  • Feel more present and engaged with life.

  • End harmful relationship patterns.

  • Form deeper connections with others.

Who can benefit from EMDR

Weekly EMDR

EMDR can be conducted through weekly scheduled appointments to target several negative memories and beliefs impeding your mood and functioning. Weekly EMDR is more effective than the traditional model of weekly talk therapy because it allows you to replace a larger amount of trauma responses with healthier thoughts and beliefs in just one, single hour.

  • Online EMDR Therapy is equally effective online as it is when conducted in-person. However, this may not be true if you are found to be inappropriate for online mental health care due to physical or neuro-divergent limitations.

  • This will vary depending on the program selected and the intensity and urgency of your needs. Most clients report feeling some relief with one session of reprocessing.

A full treatment of weekly EMDR is typically 12 sessions, however, some clients with complex or chronic trauma symptoms tend to extend treatment to address multiple issues. Extension of treatment also means long lasting mental health improvement, increased resilience, healthier thought processes, and overall improvement in physical wellness and daily functioning.

  • Recovery achieved from EMDR is long lasting, however, it may not be permanent for some people, depending their unique circumstances. This includes but is not limited to one’s history of mental health symptoms, physical health, environment, supports, and use of healthy coping mechanisms and ongoing self-care.

Some people may benefit from incorporating EMDR sessions into their routine mental health care plan in order to maintain progress.

  • Absolutely! If you already have a therapist that you love, you are welcome to explore incorporating an Intensive Program or Adjunct EMDR Therapy into your mental health care plan.

  • EMDR is not hypnotism. Hypnotism is typically conducted with the eyes closed using techniques to induce an altered state of physical and mental consciousness. This makes the client more receptive to the clinicians suggested thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. The client does not engage as much in the healing process as with EMDR.

EMDR uses eye movements to help clients attune to their mental and physical bodies, while recalling and reprocessing their own negative experiences and feelings. EMDR increases one’s conscious tolerance of discomfort, so that they can gain new and healthy ways of thinking about the past, present, and future. This effectively helps to reduce disassociation, avoidance, and harmful behaviors when faced with adversity.

  • Unfortunately EMDR is not like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. You will retain your memories, old and new, good and bad. EMDR will help you reprocess bad memories in a healthier way, which means less internalization, reduced anxiety, improved mood and functioning, and little to no rumination over the past.
